Walter Stewart Family 2010 Newsletter

Letter from the Chief

Dear Stewart Descendants,

The 103rd annual Reunion of the Walter Stewart Clan will be held during the weekend of August 7-8, 2010 at historic Fairview Presbyterian Church in Fountain Inn, S.C. We hope you will join us for the tour and family supper on Saturday, and for the big reunion meeting and picnic dinner on Sunday.

For our Saturday tour, we are responding to suggestions that we take a look at some of the resources for family genealogists in the Fountain Inn area.  We have arranged a tour of the Greenville County Library that should interest our family historians.  Their South Carolina Room is a rich source of information on families with roots in Greenville County and the Upstate.  Their very helpful staff will show us some of their treasures and tell us how to use them.   Before the tour starts, we will all have lunch together at the Saffron Restaurant in the Children's Museum near the library.  And because we know some are not familiar with downtown Greenville and might find it hard to locate these places, we will meet at Fairview Church before lunch and carpool to the tour site.

Since the loss of its textile industry, Greenville has turned itself into a major area tourist attraction, with  restoration and landscaping, tree-shaded sidewalk cafes, boutique shopping, outdoor festivals, a downtown park and a suspension walking bridge over the Reedy River.

We will return to the Fairview community building for our Saturday night supper.  Please turn in your reservation blanks for all this , and also bring along any family pictures, mementos and stories you would like to share with us.  Meanwhile, enjoy the newly added pictures on our website, www.walterstewart.org, managed by computer records coordinator Judy Smith.  She is building a wonderful file of family photos.

We would like to congratulate Fairview Church on its new fellowship building, which is behind the main church building.  This year, thanks to this wonderful addition to the life of the church, we will have our Sunday dinner in air-conditioned comfort seated around family-sized tables with plenty of room for all.   The Saturday supper, though, will continue to be held in the old fellowship building across the road from the main sanctuary.

We look forward to seeing you during Stewart reunion weekend to renew old ties and celebrate new ones.  As it has for over a hundred years, the call still goes out, bring a full picnic basket and join us. We hope to see you.

 Sincerely,

 Charles B. Stewart, Chief

Tidbits

Note from the Chief Historian: Sorry the Stewart Newsletter is so late coming to you this year, cousins.   This was my doing, since I'm responsible for the yearly Updates and didn't get them ready as soon as I should have.  There is a sad reason for this: my dear husband Dick Newton lost his battle with throat cancer in January.  There have been a lot of changes in my life since, including a move.  Our home in Greenville was just too empty and lonely, so I moved to the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community in Charleston, SC, to be closer to my two daughters in the area.  Give me a call if you're  down this way.

Help Wanted: Every reunion takes some planning and sharing of tasks to make everything go smoothly, so every year some of us meet in the SC Upstate to accomplish this.  Many who would be glad to attend these meetings live in other states, too far away to be on hand.  We need a few more "locals" within driving distance to help get ready for our reunions.  If you're willing to be on a Planning Committee, please let Chief Charles or one of the members of the Executive Committee know.  Help wanted!

Old Home Sites:  We all love to visit the old home sites in and around Fountain Inn.  Last year we visited three old home places in the House of Robert and enjoyed the hospitality of our cousins who still live on the premises or nearby.  If your family has a home near Fountain Inn and you would be willing to show it to the cousins on a Saturday afternoon tour, please speak to Chief Charles or Historian Mary Newton.   We'd love to visit.

Address Change:  We ask the Postal Service to notify us of address changes, but sometimes this information isn't available, and it always costs us extra money even to find that out.  Please, if you're moving, add the Stewart family to your notification list!  Send to our Registrar:

Or report on the family webpage at www.walterstewart.org.

Out of State CousinsAt our Stewart Executive Committee Meeting this year we talked about the problem of out-of-state cousins (mostly those who fly in from far out-of-state) trying to find food to bring to our Sunday picnic dinner.  If this is a problem for you, we suggest you donate a few extra dollars to the Sunday collection plate, and we will see that there is enough food on hand to go around (no miracles necessary, we hope).

Military Records:  John Hellams has volunteered to help coordinate our military records. If you or someone in your family was in the military please send in the pertaining information and we will add it to our records. You may bring this info to the reunion or mail it to John Hellams, 108 Nash St., Fountain Inn, SC, 29644, musiclover11137 "at" aol.com.

Genes Will Tell:  Here's a novel suggestion. 31713 Linda Clark, on hearing that some of her Stewart relatives are gluten (wheat) intolerant, says it would be good if we shared this information among ourselves. She is willing to compile information on this and other conditions known to be at least partly genetically determined. If you're interested, or want to share news of your own health problem, contact her, linclark "at" localnet.com.

Free Family Email Addresses:  We recently moved www.walterstewart.org to a new hosting service, and we can now supply walterstewart.org email addresses to any family members who would like to have one. Drop a line to judy@walterstewart.org to request one, and specify what you would like it to be.
